This is the case of the piece that I present below, the Compact sofa, designed by Charles & Ray Eames for his own house and that has been manufactured since 1954 by the Herman Miller brand.

The “Compact” sofa is an armless sofa, lightweight, foldable and very versatile but at the same time, with an elegant and contemporary design. In its beginnings, back in 1951, it was simply a wire frame that was very expensive due to the labor required and could not be mass produced until 1954.

Charles & Ray Eames had many factors in mind when designing their products, in fact in this “futuristic” piece, the “folding” backrest was secured with screws for easy transport and storage. It was upholstered in leather, vinyl and fabrics designed by Alexander Girard for Herman Miller.

It was a piece so well liked by the Eames couple that they used it in both their California studio and their Pacific Palisades home, and it was one of the last “low cost” pieces produced by the Eames office.
